Respite Program

What is Respite?
The respite program is a supportive service designed to give temporary care to individuals who have developmental disabilities for the purpose of providing relief to the individual and his/her family.

Who is Eligible?
Any child or adult who is living with a natural parent, guardian, foster parent or caregiver in our six county service area is eligible. The six county service area consists of Morgan, Scott, Greene, Jersey, Calhoun, and Cass.

Who Provides Respite?
Respite workers can be housewives, college students, teachers, neighbors, senior citizens, nurses, day care providers, family members, or anyone the individual and family chooses. Respite workers are carefully screened and trained by Pathway Services Unlimited, Inc.

Respite Gives Caregivers:
  • Time to spend with other family members.
  • Time to participate in activities of their choice (e.g.: go to class, attend meetings, exercise.)
  • Time to take a vacation for a day, a week, or even longer.
  • Time to focus on their own needs and do something for themselves!
Respite Gives the Individual:
  • Time to be away from the family unit.
  • Time to adjust to receiving care from others.
  • Time to interact with their peers and the community.
  • Time to develop valuable friendships away from school, day program, or home.
  • Risk vs. Choice is addressed in the Individual’s Respite Packet.
Respite Gives Workers:
  • Experience in the Social Service Field.
  • The joy of spending time with exceptional people!
What Type of Respite is Available?
The Respite Program provides vacation respite and emergency respite.

It is provided:
  • In the individual’s home or in the community.
  • In a respite facility in which the respite program has a respite contract.
  • In a special home placement, which includes licensed foster and day care homes.
  • Pathway Services Unlimited, Inc. involves the individual and family receiving services in the selection of their Direct Care Staff.
What are the Qualifications of the Respite Staff?
Pathway Services prefers that respite workers have one or more year’s experience programming for individuals with developmental disabilities:
  • Level 1—Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience
  • Level 2—Associates Degree or equivalent experience
  • Level 3—High School Diploma or equivalent
The Resource Development Specialist is required to be a Qualified Mental Retardation Professional (QMRP) with at least a Bachelor’s Degree in a Human Service field and have a minimum of one year’s experience providing services for individuals with developmental disabilities.
